What was your background before joining Specsavers?
I joined Specsavers with no optical experience when I was 19. I was studying biology, chemistry and English at college. I knew I was interested in eyes and I loved dealing with the public in my
part time job as a waitress.

In a nutshell, what do you do?
As a retail director and dispensing optician I have 2 major roles. I work with my Optom partner to grow the business focusing on our team and our customers. Working with the team we can see opportunities for improvement everyday, growing and learning. We love to support the team to be the best they can. My other role as a DO means I also deal with children's dispensing and more complex spectacle problems.

What does your typical day look like?
I check emails, check projections for the month, communicate any current business and opportunities for improvement or issues to the team and work alongside them to serve our many customers ensuring their journey with us is only the best.

What makes you most proud of your time at Specsavers so far?
Developing from an optical assistant with no previous experience to retail director and dispensing optician. I also love growing the team and sharing successes. Our team are very passionate and have many aspirations and I love helping them reach their goals

How have you developed?
I always had passion but struggled with confidence. Over the years and growing as a dispensing optician, then manager I have found that being responsible for the team, making decisions that affect the business and understanding what can affect the growth of the business has all helped me develop into a leader. Seeing results is a big motivator for me, I know we can always do better than we have in the past. With all that in mind my confidence isn't an issue anymore

What do you love about your job? What is a challenge?
I love our team and empowering them to build skills, I love helping them to believe they have abilities and strengths they may not see for themselves. I love our culture, we act as a family and we treat our customers this way too. I love our customers and the challenges they can present. The hardest job is to keep exceeding their expectations but we are happy to keep trying.

Describe the Specsavers culture in three words
Caring - we care about our team and our customers as though they are our family.
Professional - our team are knowledgeable, experienced and will help run our store in a professional way our customers will enjoy
Value - not only the value the customer receives but how we value their business and loyalty, we value our team and build their skills to reach their goals

What advice would you give someone looking to join Specsavers?
Expect the unexpected, you might be surprised how far you can go. There is a huge range of opportunity, you are your only limit!
