Why did you consider an apprenticeship and having done so why specifically Specsavers?
I wanted to learn skills and experiences that would lead to a career. In the past I have been in customer service roles and this felt like more of a career option for the future. Specsavers is a big company with lots of opportunities to grow and develop a career, I am excited to complete the Cert 3 and Cert 4 programmes and then I am really passionate about achieving the dispensing optician qualification.
I attended the interview process, at the beginning of the process I was contacted by Specsavers Recruitment Services who were very supportive and provided me with all the information needed for the role, they were helpful with preparing me and also managing my expectations of the role and the interview process. Upon my initial interview I met with the store retail manager who was very informative and welcoming, she showed me around the store and provided me with details of what each department does on a day to day basis. As the store is so big I found this beneficial to learn about all of the different products and services Specsavers offer which I found very interesting and made me want to get started.
I have completed a college course in the past which I enjoyed but I have always had the thought that I would like to earn a wage whilst I learn and build a career. I have worked in retail settings in the past but have never really had a career plan or had the potential of the opportunities available during and after my apprenticeship with Specsavers.
I had researched different opportunities but did not apply for them because I wanted to find the right opportunity for me and my aspirations and needs. I wanted to start a career from the apprenticeship stages as this felt like a more structured way to learn and gave me a good feeling as I felt like being on an apprenticeship, especially with an established company like Specsavers would make me feel that I am being invested in and my learning is being taken seriously.
How was the application and selection process and the experience of joining Specsavers?
I was very excited to join the team and to get to know everyone, the first couple of weeks were overwhelming and I found that there was a lot to learn. Once I had spent a few more weeks in the store this feeling started to subside and I started to work closely with my colleagues and ask lots of questions and gained knowledge from their experience. I utilised systems like ilearn to build my confidence and knowledge which was a great support for me as I built knowledge quickly and was able to concentrate on specific areas like pre-screening and customer interactions in the early stages.
How have you found learning with Specsavers?
I have found each aspect of learning to be interesting, being able to apply each new skill to my role on a daily basis keeps the role feeling fresh. Being a part of a big store and a large team means I have many resources to aid in my learning and each day I feel there is something new to learn which prevents the role from feeling stagnant and keeps learning interesting. My colleagues have been very supportive and have taken my learning as seriously as me and are always ready to help and support me wherever needed.
What thoughts and plans for your career do you have when you complete this apprenticeship?
Following my apprenticeship I plan on immediately working towards my cert 3 qualification. Once that is completed I aim to progress to cert 4 and and then the dispensing optician qualification which is where I aim to progress to in the future, but I understand with a company like Specsavers that I would be nurtured to further my knowledge and career goals in a way that suits me and the store. Working for such a large company with so many career prospects and having the support and resources is beneficial for me and my future as I can see the development and progression of my colleagues, and have learned about these progression routes as part of my apprenticeship so can feel comfortable knowing that Specsavers is a big part of my future.
What advice would you give to someone considering applying for an apprenticeship at Specsavers?
I would advise those considering to prepare for a challenge, it is a fast paced environment with a lot to learn but Specsavers does provide all the support needed and if you’re willing to dedicate yourself to the program and are prepared to develop your skills, Specsavers will be a fulfilling and rewarding career option for anyone who is passionate about customer service and providing excellent eye care.
