Building a career in Finance with Specsavers - Louise's story
Meet Louise Harris - Senior Finance Administrator
What was your background before joining Specsavers?
Previously I have worked with one of the UK’s top banks and another financial company;
both consisting of complaint handling. I dealt with complaints over the phone and created bespoke letters detailing my findings and decisions made. It entailed generating calculations, processing payments and reconciliations. With my roles I have worked my way up from administrative where I would be handling post into senior positions involving more complex investigative duties. I worked on projects with the FSCS, FSA and represented the companies externally. Also I created guides, trained new starters and mentored them. In addition to providing training I would create team building exercises and host meetings.
In a nutshell, what do you do?
I am a senior administrator in Contracted Services within Accounts Receivable. We are responsible for the billing of the NHS Contracts for AQP Hearcare Sales. This role involves
a lot of data requiring manipulation, reconciliation and analysis. We deal with a variety of
queries from our store partners, CCG’s and internal customers.
What does your typical day look like?
There is no typical day as we work on a billing cycle. Microsoft Excel is used most frequently throughout the day as well as Microsoft Access. This involves data manipulation, reconciliation and analysis. You may also deal with the odd query as and when these are received in. The types of queries would be regarding invoices and ensuring these are correct.
What makes you most proud of your time at Specsavers so far?
Specsavers is a great company to work for; it feels like you are part of a family instead of just an employee. The company looks after their staff by providing you with all the tools and support needed to enable you to progress and build a career.
How have you developed?
In a short space of time I have progressed from an administrator to a senior within the FSSC and worked in three different teams. Specsavers have provided the support needed to enable me to progress and cross train. I am a continuous improvement champion where we are thinking of new ways we can improve and streamline processes to eliminate waste.
What do you love about your job? What is a challenge?
At first the role can seem daunting due to the volume of data but this also provides a great learning experience for anyone who is interested in analysing and manipulating data sets with formulas.
My role has a variety of tasks throughout the month which keeps it interesting. The investigative element to the role appeals to me as I enjoy analytical roles.
Describe the Specsavers culture in three words
Diverse, supportive and innovative.
What advice would you give someone looking to join Specsavers?
If you enjoy an analytical role Contracted Services is a great team to be on. Specsavers offers its employees the opportunity and support to progress through the company.
