Life as a Regional Relationship Manager at Specsavers

Meet Dominic Doran who joined us from eigroup as a Regional

Relationship Manager supporting our North & West Yorkshire


What was your background before joining Specsavers?
I worked for Boots Opticians as practice manager in Leeds, then progressed through the ranks to run their flagship health and beauty stores, mainly in Huddersfield. From there I worked for B&Q as a General Manager flagship store and for the last 5 years I worked as a Regional Manager across Yorkshire for the eigroup, which is a company not to dissimilar to Specsavers (Just in hospitality, not Optics).

In my last role as a Regional Manager for the eigroup, I was responsible for the success of my partners who ran their own businesses through an agreed agreement on certain terms i.e. rent & purchasing terms. I would also be responsible for capex investment, partner training & support, recruitment and in summary, making sure every partner (or publican as we referred to them) were as successful and profitable as they could be.

Once a year there is a group called the ALMR that seeks from across the hospitality industry the very best operations/area/regional managers in the market. There are over 200 different companies that the ALMR work with every year to find the very best operations/area/regional people and recognise their achievements nationally. In 2015, I was shortlisted to the final 10 for the fantastic work that my area and partners had achieved, which was a great moment in time. (There was lots of assessment’s, tests etc. to get that accolade).

In a nutshell, what do you do?
I am the Regional Relationship Manager for North & West Yorkshire (so home territory for me!). In essence I am there to support the regional Joint Venture Partners (JVP’s) and their businesses in becoming the most profitable that they can be, now this can involve all sorts of aspects of work, but I would say in a nutshell, that I liken it to bringing together the best ideas I see from the company/market and our own teams and pay it forward into all the stores to create a sense of purpose into winning together.

What does your typical day look like?
I like to stay healthy, so you’ll often find me up early doing some sort of exercise (even before my kids get up), which I find sets me up for the day ahead. After that, I like to spend as much time as possible in stores, meeting with all the great people that we have and sharing great ideas amongst each other. I also get to see all the great work that the stores teams achieve every day for our customers and each other which never stops to impress me; I don’t think anybody else does that better than all of us at Specsavers.

What makes you most proud of your time at Specsavers so far?
I think that we have some of the most talented people in the market working for us, that go without mention every day to deliver brilliant service for our customers and for our stores, think that without doubt this work and effort totally compels our customers to keep coming back to us time & time again. It's very humbling to see how hard our stores work every day to make sure we own our own local market share.

How have you developed?
I’ve been very fortunate to work with some great people throughout my induction, I’d like to shout out all the team at Huddersfield, and especially the partners Adrian and Richard for their time & patience with me as they were my host store. I learnt a whole heap from time with them, and clearly from my time there I can see where they do so well.

I have also been very humbled that all of the Retail Advancement team have been very helpful and willing to help me learn the ropes, as well as everyone else that has taken time out to spend with me, answering all those awkward and silly new person questions and queries that you have.

What do you love about your job? What is a challenge?
I love being part of a winning team; I think it’s just really great that we all get to work every day with some very talented people who are all working towards the same thing, to make sure Specsavers is the best in the market and first choice for all of our customers.

What advice would you give someone looking to join Specsavers?
Do it, but be prepared to bring your A-game to work, there is no second best when your part of a winning team, its only right and fair for all those that are doing their very best every day to make us as good as what we are that everyone plays their part.
