What was your background before joining Specsavers?
I joined Specsavers when I was 17, almost 15 years ago. I worked in a customer service environment from the age of 14 whilst I was at school and college. Specsavers seemed like the perfect opportunity for me.
In a nutshell, what do you do?
As a retail director and dispensing optician my role is to lead the retail aspects of the business. I am responsible for the day to day running and future growth of my two practices. My personal objective
is to support my team to provide exceptional customer service.
What does your typical day look like?
I don’t really have a typical day. Every day is very different. I could be on the retail floor working with my team to serve our customers, in business meetings, in my office dealing with my everlasting pile of paperwork or keeping in touch with the many members of my team.
What makes you most proud of your time at Specsavers so far?
There are so many things that I could mention. I guess that the way I have grown as a person makes me the most proud. Through my experiences working with the team at Specsavers Blackburn my confidence and self-esteem has changed massively. This has helped me to further myself and has got me where I am today.
How have you developed?
I realised I had a real passion for customer service from a young age. I started my career with Specsavers in 2002, initially working as a full time optical assistant. Specsavers funded my studies for a degree in ophthalmic dispensing at Anglia Ruskin University and I qualified as a dispensing optician in 2009. During this time I took on various roles within the management team at both practices in Blackburn.
My aspiration was to become a partner in my own store so I decided to continue my studies to make this possible. I completed ILM level 3 Award and Certificate in 2014 and continued onto Pathway that I was successful in completing in 2015. I was delighted to become a partner in Blackburn in April 2016.
What do you love about your job? What is a challenge?
I love the people I work with. I love to support my team to be the best that they can be. I thrive on their successes and the success of the business. I suppose that every day can be a challenge in different ways, this is one of the reasons I enjoy my job. There is never a dull moment, always something to keep me on my toes.
