Meet Debbie Shimadry - Accounts Payable Manager
What was your background before joining Specsavers?
Prior to working at Specsavers I was an accounts office manager for an SME focusing on the full accounts process. Prior to this I was a registered Nurse working in Intensive Care at Nottingham City Hospital.
In a nutshell, what do you do?
What does your typical day look like?
My day begins with daily morning markets to discuss the previous days performance, escalate any issues and plan the workload for the day. Dealing with people issues, conducting 121’s with direct reports. Analysing data for continuous improvements projects. Planning resource/workload and liaising with other teams to provide/receive help as required. Meeting with other managers in finance to ensure that we are providing a consistent message in terms of policies and processes across different finance functions.
What makes you most proud of your time at Specsavers so far?
As an Accounts Payable Manager I have been in the great position where I am able to recruit young, enthusiastic and talented individuals. It is immensely rewarding to see them grow as individuals and develop into professional team members who have moved within the business to fulfil their career ambitions. I’m proud to have played a role in their development and growth during their time in my teams and feel that I have prepared them for their further development within the company.
How have you developed?
I have completed Level 3 of the ILM and am currently working towards the GBS Diploma in Finance Shared Services. Although I really enjoy formal study I feel that I have gained much in my development by working with my fellow managers and gaining an understanding of their areas and how they work.
What do you love about your job? What is a challenge?
My favourite aspect of my role is people management, as I gain a huge sense of achievement from helping and developing my team. People management can also be very challenging and I enjoy this aspect as well. Sometimes I have to work really hard to find a solution for an individual that not only meets their needs but also those of the business. When you get this combination right, its magical to see the person flourish.
