Meet Maria Higgins - Finance Shared
Service Centre (FSSC) Team Leader
What was your background before joining Specsavers?
I worked at Experian for 5 years before moving to Specsavers. I started in the car data check team and moved to the FSSC, working in both Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable as an administrator before moving to Specsavers.
In a nutshell, what do you do?
I am the Accounts Payable Support Team Leader within the Accounts Payable department, lucky enough to manage a team of 7 lovely people. The Accounts Payable Support team's main task is to deal with all Service Now queries from UK, Irish and Dutch stores received via FCR. This involves a lot of investigation work and a lot of communication with other teams within the business as well as stores to ensure any issues are dealt with as quickly as possible. My job is to make sure that team targets and SLAs are met whilst keeping the team motivated and supported through extremely busy periods. As we are part of the Accounts Payable department, my role requires me to media payments daily so that customers are refunded promptly. I also have project work and regular reviews and 121s with each team member, setting objectives in line with the team KPIs.
What does your typical day look like?
The first thing I do when I arrive is make sure all team tasks are covered, and any urgent work is divided amongst the team. I then action my emails and organise my workload for the day around any meetings I have. Payments are usually passed to me around 11am to check and media before submissions at 1pm. I then either work on Service Now if we are very busy, or work on my Team Leader duties, helping the team with any queries they have throughout the day.
What makes you most proud of your time at Specsavers so far?
I have worked really hard to become a Team Leader. Helping someone in my team to develop and become more motivated to reach their potential is something that makes me proud and makes all of the hard work worthwhile.
How have you developed?
I joined Specsavers in 2011 as an administrator in Sales Accounting, moving to the Euro team and progressing to senior administrator in Supply Chain Accounts Payable. I was then promoted to Team Leader in UK Stores in 2014 and then moved to Accounts Payable Support in 2016. I have completed an ILM3 Award in Leadership and Management through Specsavers which has really helped with my confidence as a Team Leader. I have also always had support from my managers which has played a big part in my development.
What do you love about your job? What is a challenge?
I enjoy coming into work and love working with my team as we all get on really well. There has been a lot of change in the department recently and there is a lot more to come which can be very challenging at times. Accounts Payable Support have been brilliant at adapting to these changes which has made life at work much easier.
