Deciding which route to take after school is always a difficult choice, especially if you’re unsure of what the best option might be. With everyone giving you tips on which university course to sign up for or which career path to take, it can be quite tough to stick to your guns and choose a route that’s truly the best for you.

Chloe Hughes, 17, from Pontewydd in Wales had the exact same challenge and ended up swapping College for an Apprenticeship as a result. Chloe hasn’t looked back since.

When I was in sixth form I felt lost, as I had no idea what I was going to do after I finished my course. I saw that Specsavers Cwmbran was advertising for an apprentice -
it’s always had a good reputation so I went for it and was so chuffed when I was offered the role.’

Despite having no experience in the world of optics, with the support of her new team Chloe quickly got to grips with her role as an apprentice and has flown through her training; taking just nine months to complete the standard year-long programme.

In terms of her self-esteem and communication skills, Chloe admits she has come on leaps and bounds as an Apprentice at Specsavers: ‘I feel like my people skills and confidence have increased hugely since I’ve joined the store, largely thanks to the helpful advice and support that the team here has given me.’

Chloe is now looking forward to completing her training to become a full-time Optical Assistant and hopes to get the chance to become a Dispensing Optician with Specsavers in the future.
