Droitwich opticians puts career development in the frame
Have you thought about a career in optics?
A member of staff from an opticians in Droitwich is encouraging young people in the local area to consider a career in optics having recently completed a year-long apprenticeship programme.
Shabbar Hasan, aged 20, qualified as an optical assistant after training with the team at Specsavers on St Andrews Square. Having already started his next stage of training at the store, he is hoping to encourage others like him to think about working in the optical industry.
‘I hadn’t considered apprenticeships before, but the programme offered by Specsavers really caught my eye,’ Shabbar comments. ‘I’ve really enjoyed my course over the last year and am very grateful to the team here in Droitwich for the opportunities I’ve been given to progress. I’ve been able to work towards a qualification while learning all about Specsavers, and completing this course has given me a new goal to qualify as an optometrist. I am looking forward to my next years in the optical industry working towards my new career intentions.’
Apprenticeships at Specsavers are open to anyone over the age of 16 and require no previous optical experience. Those that complete the programme become qualified optical assistants with the chance of full-time employment, as well as opening up further studying opportunities.
Store director, Emma Singh, adds: ‘We’re delighted that Shabbar has successfully completed his apprenticeship. It has been a pleasure to see him develop his skills and he has fantastic ambitions for his future at Specsavers. Apprenticeships are a great alternative to university, allowing young people to unlock their full potential in a supportive environment. I’d like to encourage anyone in the local area who is interested in apprenticeships to get in touch.’
The Specsavers apprenticeship scheme has been running for more than three years and 90% of the apprentices take on full-time positions within the company. Specsavers in Droitwich has now had five successful apprentices qualify and stay on at the store.
