A Retail Director with a Passion to Support Young Talent
Jo McLean is a Retail Director who has risen through the ranks to jointly-own her business at Specsavers Bodmin. Jo cites continuous and incremental improvement, as well as a passion for guiding and supporting younger talent, as the key to her career success:
“I am currently a Retail Director, which means I am responsible for recruitment, training and development of my staff as well as ensuring we keep the highest standards of customer service at all times. My role involves everything from leading and motivating the team, recognising staff when they do a good job, to being hands on in the lab and on the shop floor.
It’s a perfect role for me as it means I get to enjoy my passion for optics, while constantly being challenged to learn new skills, as well as teaching others. I thrive on the exciting, fast pace in-store – every day is different and I’m constantly challenging myself and my team. I love having the ability to help my team progress and knowing that I am supporting them in achieving their goals. It’s such a rewarding feeling.
I also heavily champion the Specsavers Apprenticeship programme. Supporting and nurturing young talent in our local community is so important, particularly in the South West where we want to encourage young talent to stay and support rural areas. The Apprenticeship scheme allows people to really get under the skin of the business, move around different departments and receive in depth, on-the-job training. It’s such a fantastic opportunity for anyone considering a career in optics and offers quick progression, learning and development.
I started at Specsavers with no knowledge of optics, but I knew I had a great passion to help people and deliver great customer service. I surpassed everything I ever thought I would by qualifying as a registered Dispensing Optician, becoming a Joint Venture Partner and now playing a part in some leading partner forums.
Now I ensure that all my recruits get the same opportunities I did! My team all have twice-yearly appraisals and they each have five-year goal plans in place. We heavily support training and development from day one here at Bodmin.”
