At Specsavers, we’re always happy to welcome and encourage new talent within our stores, which is why our Apprenticeship programmes have such a great reputation for providing young people with a supportive introduction to the world of work.
Ever since our Apprenticeship scheme was introduced, we’ve been hearing success stories up and down the country from young people who have boosted both their career prospects and their self-confidence by starting at Specsavers.
If you’re curious about how an Apprenticeship at Specsavers could help you develop but feel unsure about whether it’s the right option for you, listen to what a few of our recent apprentices have had to say about their time with us:
“The Apprenticeship is an excellent career choice, as it's not just a short-term job, it's a progression route to a long-term career at Specsavers. Specsavers have really helped me become better at socialising and interacting with lots of different people with different needs every day. The Apprenticeship has helped me to develop my confidence and knowledge, and I can honestly say that I am really enjoying my learning with Specsavers.”
“When I started my Apprenticeship, I was quite nervous because I didn’t like people watching what I was doing. Over the last few months, I have started to enjoy my job and the Apprenticeship. I have always had a lot of help from the staff in store and my assessor. If I get stuck, my assessor is only a phone call away. I am happy that my English has improved and I’m now really enjoying Dispensing at work.”
“This Apprenticeship has changed my life. I wanted to do A-levels before, but I was told about the progression path after the Apprenticeship programme and I am now enrolled at ABDO college for the Dispensing Optician programme, which I am so pleased about. The level of confidence, knowledge and skills which I have gained during the Apprenticeship has been second to none. My store colleagues and assessor have been so supportive, and I am now looking forward to a rewarding career with Specsavers.”
“When I started with Specsavers, I was looking for a way to earn money but also gain a career in the optical sector. Once I finished the Apprenticeship, I moved on to do the Cert 3 programme, then found an interest in the Hearcare side of Specsavers. I did the Hearing Care Assistant course and passed this, now I've started Hearing Aid Dispensing at the University of Cambridge. I'm glad I came to do the Apprenticeship at Specsavers as it has given me a career option that I probably would never have pursued.”
“I have developed many new skills, both professional and personal, whilst completing my Apprenticeship this year. Throughout my time at Specsavers, I have had a great amount of support from both my assessors and store managers. I have been shown how to access various sources of information and have been able to gain valuable knowledge and work experience from my time in store. Now I want to continue learning within my new roles as Retail Supervisor and In-store Trainer and am keen to use my new skills to give something back to my team, as well as the business as a whole.
In addition to celebrating the scheme’s recent successes, we’re also really proud to be able to highlight the achievements of our graduate apprentices. Here are a few words from Jordan, a former apprentice turned Dispensing Assistant who joined us back when our scheme was first launched:
“When I joined Specsavers as an apprentice back in 2014, I wasn’t really sure whether it would be right for me. However, everyone was so welcoming and helpful, and in less than a year I was promoted- becoming a full-time member of staff. Although I started back in 2014, I feel like I’m still learning something new every day. I’m looking forward to further training and I’m so excited to see what the future will bring.”
