From the Shop Floor to Knocking on Doors – Thomas’ Success Story

Thomas McKeown wasn’t sure what career path to take before realising the huge opportunity available to him with Specsavers. He has recently taken the next step in his optical career and secured a role as a Domiciliary Optical Advisor with Specsavers Home Visits. Now, he is able to put his experience to excellent use in a new environment – and he’s enjoying every minute of it.

Despite Thomas’ uncertainty when he left school, he discovered that at Specsavers, the most important thing we look for is a passion to deliver exceptional customer care and a desire to learn and develop, making him the perfect fit for the business.

“At first, I thought you had to have some sort of qualification to work for Specsavers, but after realising that there are opportunities for people like myself who didn’t do the best in school, I decided to apply and make a new start in a career with Specsavers. I started back in 2012 working in-store - but I have now settled working in the domiciliary industry with Specsavers.”

In his new role, Thomas has a unique opportunity to experience a diverse working environment day-to-day, all while continuing to develop his skills.

“Every day is very different. When working we see people from all walks of life, which interests me a lot. One day I could be over in Oldham, and the next I could be around the corner from my house. The domiciliary work gives me a great opportunity to show off my professionalism and the skills I have learnt in store over the years.”

Thomas successfully secured his new position with the help of Specsavers Recruitment, the internal recruitment team at Specsavers.
