Taunton optician welcomes new apprentice
July 20, 2018
Specsavers in Taunton has welcomed their latest apprentice, 21 years old Katie Oliver from nearby Chard. Katie joins the team at Specsavers Taunton – located on East Street – on the Specsavers apprenticeship scheme as one of the first optical technician apprentices.
Katie will learn how to order lenses for cutting in the lab before assembling the glasses and completing quality checks for the customer.
Katie says: ‘I studied psychology, sociology, and health and social care at sixth form and worked briefly in a betting shop. I came across the Specsavers apprenticeship position in Taunton and really liked the idea of earning money while I worked but also having a career ahead of me.’
Once Katie has completed the apprenticeship she will become fully qualified as a lab technician with the chance of full-time employment at Specsavers.
Emma Denham, Specsavers Taunton store partner, added: ‘Katie has made a great start and we look forward to working with her and supporting her ambitions. Katie follows in the footsteps of Grace Callery and Charlie Ward, who both joined as apprentices.’
The Specsavers apprenticeship scheme is open to anyone over the age of 16 and requires no previous optical experience. Apprentices can choose to work as an optical assistant or take on roles in customer service or retail.
