The Specsavers Future Talent Programme - Laura's story

Tell us a bit about yourself and your background to date?
I graduated from the University of Sussex in 2009 with a degree in Psychology. I quickly joined the Specsavers Graduate Scheme and since then I've had the opportunity to perform a wide range of roles, mainly focused in IT and Project delivery.
What attracted you to Specsavers?
When I applied for the Specsavers Graduate Scheme I was living in Guernsey and saw the
advert in the local paper (!). I was attracted to the family culture of Specsavers and it's size.
I knew that Specsavers operated internationally and thought that might yield some great opportunities which it has done! I was also a long standing customer of my local Specsavers in St Peter Port - my experience with the store definitely increased my interest!
What have you most enjoyed about your programme and career to date – what are the highlights?
There are so many! To pick out 2, I'd say joining the Graduate Scheme and my current role in Northern Europe. The Graduate Scheme was the beginning of my career with Specsavers and was my first opportunity to work in corporate environment. The scheme started with working in store for 3 months before taking part in 4 placements across the business over the next 20 months. The role in Northern Europe has given me the opportunity to test my delivery skills in a complex region that operates across 5 countries. I'm halfway through this secondment and it's been great so far!
What advice would you give someone else looking to join a Talent Programme at Specsavers?
What are your career plans – what’s next for you?
I stay because I am always learning and developing at Specsavers. I've had some brilliant and varied opportunities and as long as this continues, I won't be going anywhere!
