A Gateway to a Degree in Optometry, Abbi from Cribbs Causeway

As working in the optical industry has always been a career that I wished to pursue, when I came across the Apprenticeship that Specsavers offered, I knew it was an opportunity that I had to take.

Not only did the Apprenticeship teach me the skills required to be an Optical Assistant, it also helped me to build my confidence and grow as an individual.

Following the completion of my Optical Assistant Apprenticeship, I am now studying an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Human Biology, Physics and Psychology. This will then allow me to go on and study a degree in Optometry, which has always been my goal.

Thanks to the support and qualifications I gained from Specsavers, this goal has become possible. I would highly recommend an Apprenticeship to anyone considering it,because the skills and experience that you gain are invaluable and can be used in future careers.

A Chance to Grow as a Person, Leo from Longton

Over the past 12-18 months that I have been on the Apprenticeship program, I have not only grown as a Lab Technician but also as a person. I have been taught a multitude of skills within optics and the techniques behind the making of spectacles but also how to work within an environment with colleagues to ultimately provide the best service possible that we can for patients.

From the beginning of my Apprenticeship, I have been set regular targets on a monthly basis. These targets have kept me focused and also allowed me to not only see what I need to work and improve upon, but also shown what progress I have made, what I have done well and what I can confidently say that I have achieved.

I have a plan to stay on at Specsavers and to keep working my way up via different courses and taking every chance that comes my way when it comes to new learning and what is next. I do not want to become complacent and happy with just knowing what I currently know as I know that there is always opportunity to learn more and know more about the optical side of things when it comes to the Lab.

I am excited to see what the future could hold for me within Specsavers and to see what I could achieve later on down the line.

Support Every Step of the Way, Sarah from Ripon

By day five of my Apprenticeship, I was confidently pre-testing and enjoying the interaction with my patients.

Week two was about relocating to the new premises, which were so much bigger and about to become much busier. It was initially very daunting but, in fact, was an ideal opportunity to bond more with the team as everything was new to all of us.

My Store Manager, Alison, has ensured that I get the dedicated study time to complete the iLearn modules plus all the courses at both the Newcastle and Wakefield training centres.

Amy, my tutor, keeps me fully informed with what is happening throughout my programme. She is currently setting up a group session with other Apprentices, which will be an amazing way of understanding how much we are learning and have other Apprentices to ask questions and discuss any issues with.

I have had a bit of a wobble as I felt overwhelmed watching others in the team who are so knowledgeable in all aspects of the job, but I was supported by my Director, Annette, Store Manager, Alison and my tutor Amy. They were able to show me how far I had progressed in the weeks that I had been in the business.

My aspiration would be to achieve a Cert 4 qualification. I’ve also witnessed Joanna, who was also an Apprentice, in her first year of the Dispensing Optician course and is clearly loving it. Plus, Holly who is now on the Hearing Care Assistant course...there are just so many new opportunities on hand!
