After a summer placement with Specsavers in her second year of university, Meera instantly knew that Specsavers Ilford was the place she wanted to advance her career as a newly qualified Optometrist.
She chats to us about her career development and exciting future with Specsavers.

What initially drew you to Specsavers?
“I carried out a summer placement during my second year at Specsavers as I enjoyed working with an experienced team, which were very helpful during busy times. I had come to find that this was the same when I carried out trial days at different Specsavers stores. I knew that my Pre-Reg was going to be a difficult year and many of my friends who worked as Pre-Reg’s at gave me positive feedback, which made me want to complete my Pre-Reg here too!”

Tell us a bit about your career journey so far with Specsavers Ilford:
“I began my Pre-Reg Journey at Specsavers Ilford in 2017 and I was lucky enough to have qualified a year after this. I faced some hurdles in the beginning with managing my work/social life balance but was given immense support all throughout my Pre-Reg from my family, friends and Specsavers which really helped me to get to where I am now.”

How do you feel you’ve been supported at Specsavers Ilford throughout your Pre-Reg year?
“The experienced team at Ilford store were able to provide fantastic training which helped me progress quickly. Early on during my Pre-Reg, my supervisors provided me with invaluable guidance and support. This involved regular performance reviews and personal development plans that helped me complete my assessments and feel confident about them.”

How do you feel you have you changed since your first day?
“I feel I am more confident with my patient management and I am able to tailor my eye examination to the individual depending on their needs and concerns. I find myself learning something new every day and I was quick to find that not every day is the same at Specsavers Ilford!”

Now you’re a Qualified Optometrist, what are you most excited about in your career ahead?
“To continue providing optimal patient care and, in the future, explore other avenues within my career that will add to my skill set as an optometrist. The store is set to get OCT technology later this year which is exciting, and it will be great to use as a part of clinically managing my patients. I am excited to witness optometry moving in a shared-care direction in my store, this will hopefully enable us to manage patients’ symptoms within an optometric setting. All of this opens the doors to vast opportunities for newly qualified optometrists like myself.”

What makes you most proud of your time at Specsavers so far?
“Being able to use industry leading technology and develop my own personal skills in optometry to pick up early signs of potentially life-threatening conditions.”

Describe the culture of Specsavers in three words:
“Professional, Friendly and Solidarity.”
